Two Options

July 13, 2009

It’s Monday, and I have narrowed my ideas for a new writing project down to two. One is a novel, and the other is a new blog idea. I won’t change this blog, but I may start a second.

First, the novel: A few months ago, I came across a news story about Nevada brothels and how they are lobbying for legal permission to add male prostitutes to their ranks (and suddenly you’re not in Kansas anymore… don’t worry, I’ll keep this PG). It got me thinking about legal prostitution and brothels and what made women pursue that as a career. I borrowed Brothel by Alexa Albert from my library, and I found out. By the time I thought to check out someone’s actual research, though, I had already written a few pages about a widow who considers it. I got as far as her interview before I read Albert’s book, and clearly my uninformed perspective was not realistic, but I’m still fascinated by the possibilities. Apparently there’s as much intrigue in a modern American brothel as Scheherazade made legend from the harem.

Next (and much tamer): a blog about food. This would be one of those “any subject + life insight = interesting” blogs. I love food; I love to cook. I especially love to cook for my friends, and there’s a lot to be said about the connections people make over dinner. Practically speaking, I would follow AONC’s 279 Days model.

So that’s them; enter your votes! I’m also considering doing both at once to keep my wandering mind engaged.
